Chapter Twelve
Jake
Two weeks later Jake found himself parked in front of Mattieâs place, eager as hell to see his boy. Mattie had been working and attending his classes nonstop and they hadnât had a chance to see each other since the morning after heâd helped move the boys into their new place.
There had been many phone calls and even more texts, Jake feeling the need to ensure his boy was taking care of himself, doing regular check-ins to make sure Mattie was eating and getting enough rest. Heâd even taken to having food delivered when he knew Mattieâs schedule for the day. It wasnât enough. He knew deep down it wasnât anywhere near enough. The longer theyâd been apart the more exhausted Mattie sounded.
But heâd done his best to make the most of the limited time they did have to communicate. They learned more about each other over those weeks, little snippets of each otherâs lives here and there when they had time to text or chat for a few before Mattie had to either go to work, school, or study. One of the things he was most excited to learn more about was Mattieâs hopes for the future and how his education was going to get him there.
His boy was being good at telling him, the night before each day, what his schedule was and what he had to get done. But the list of things was long, and Jake knew something had to give. It was like putting a Band-Aid on a gunshot wound. Only a stop gap. Theyâd never had time to really sit down and go over Mattieâs work and school schedule which had changed so much during the two weeks, Jake couldnât find a pattern anywhere besides his class times.
One thing was for sure. His boy was run ragged. He could tell he was getting worn down when theyâd had a couple of video chats while theyâd been apart. He hated not having more control over Mattieâs life, but it seemed getting the time to sort out the details hadnât been in the cards yet. That needed to be remedied, which was why he was there at Mattieâs. Well, that and he was going crazy being unable to see his boy.
Mattie finally had a day off work and though it was in the middle of the week and after two of Mattieâs early morning classes, Jake hadnât hesitated to take the afternoon and the following morning off to be able to spend time with his boy.
When he rang the bell, he heard the boys yelling at each other but couldnât make out the words. When the door finally opened, he was surprised to be greeted by Carter and not Mattie. Though one of those raised voices heâd heard belonged to his boy, so at least Jake knew he was there.
âHey, Jake.â Carter ushered him in.
âHi, Carter. How are you doing?â
âIâm doing okay. How is Sammy?â
Jake smiled. âFrustrated his brother wonât let him break the lease they signed and find himself a new roommate.
